The Royal Garden

This can be found in the middle of the Royal Garden next to the Royal Gazebo, a beautiful example of Italian Renaissance. One of the most beautiful gardens of Prague Castle is the one containing the singing fountain. The Royal Garden was designed around 1500 AD as an Italian garden. As time passed, it was dec orated with exotic trees and plants. Cedar and Fig trees thrive and also tulips have grown here since 1554, when the Turkish Ambassador brought them to the Castle. Red, white and yellow tulips bloomed in the Castle’s Royal Garden for the first time anywhere in Europe, long before spreading across the European continent, in particular Holland.

The Garden on the Bastion

The name of this garden recalls the medieval fortifications on the north-west side of the Castle. During the Theresian rebuilding the terrain here was levelled and a park laid out in 1861. The garden as it is today is the work of architect Josip Plecnik from 1930. One can walk from the Garden on the Bastion along Plecnik's footbridge and the northern wing of the Castle to the Powder Bridge.

The Southern Gardens

The Southern Gardens came into being gradually on the site of the fortifications below Prague Castle. In 1559 the governor Ferdinand of the Tyrol made a private garden on the most western part of the moat, which he had filled in. Since the middle of the 18th century this place has been called the Garden of Paradise.
